The bus dropped us off bright and early to the Museum quarter of Vienna – only to find nothing opened until at least 10am or wasn’t opening at all seeing as it was a Sunday. To tick one of Abby’s goals for the trip we went in search of a famed Viennese coffee. Success pretty much sums that experience up!
Modern art was the second of our cultural experiences for the day. Modern art is hard enough to understand as it is and even more so when the explanations for the pieces are written in Austrian! There were a couple of inspiring pieces but generally the exhibition drew bewildered looks from us, although it definitely tried to get us to think very much out of the box. Brains exhausted we took on the heat of the day to wander past some of the beautiful Austrian buildings and found some grass in the park (which didn’t have a Do not stand on the grass sign – Hooray!) to have lunch. This lead to our third cultural experience for the day – Torte..mmm mmm mmm!
And the smallest cup of coffee Abby has encountered so far, particularly when she had ordered a large, we “heart” language barriers!...
Then it was back on the bus and off to visit a Schnapps museum. Mr “Schnapps”, a round man quick witted and very proud of his family business, showed us his wares.
Whilst cracking little schnapps jokes he didn’t give too many secrets away. The specialty of the business was schnapps with 23 carat gold flakes, which apparently very good for you. Best served in a wine glass with cheap champers to bubble up the flakes and presented under the brightest light in the room. Then came the tasting, 3 shots each and back on the bus.
Fifth and final cultural experience was dinner and a Vienna concert celebrating famous local talent such as Mozart and J Strauss. Dinner- the most unappealing main we have ever seen but tasted ridiculously good!!! Feeling very classy we filed up to the concert hall with the intimate setting of a large chamber music group on a low stage and 500 odd people, topdeck crew jammed in the back row. Not only did the chamber musicians play we had Opera singers and ballet dancers as well. An entertaining evening aimed to give tourists a taste of the musical side of Vienna.
