DAY 13 – French Riviera to Florence Italy

Ah travel days how we heart thee…all most as much as we heart queuing. We travelled the coast towards Italy. On the way we stopped at Fragraund, where had a tour of a French perfumery. Which took all of 10mins with a big sales pitch at the end. We all fell for it…sweet deal but the sweet smell of living cheaply lingered for the next few days.

Factoid: it takes 5 ton of rose petals to make 1 litre of essential oil. To make a perfume one first must become a Nose/Le Nez. This process takes 10 years. Only 150 Noses are in the world, 100 of which reside in France. A nose cannot:

1. drink alcohol

2. smoke

3. eat spicy food

4. work for more than three hours a day. Therefore it takes more than 6 months to produce a new fragrance.

Back on the bus with no sense of smell, headaches and our wallets slightly lighter we carried on our merry way with the coastal French scenery soon turning into the hills of Tuscany. We made a slight detour on our way to check out the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and yes the pictures are correct the tower does lean and the lean increases approx 2cm a year and architects reason that the tower may only last another 100 years before it falls over.

Here we enter the world of Camping grounds or shall we call them camping resorts. There are few tents and campervans around the multiple restaurants, shops, supermarket, swimming pools, bars, horses, sports facilities, cabins, chalets, bungalows and compulsory fountain. Yes a far cry from the patch of grass and toilet block that is standard of NZ camping grounds.

Tea that night was at the Pizzeria onsite, here we got our first taste of Italian cuisine and learnt an important lesson – pasta in Italy is generally an entrée. So when the pasta arrived to a table of hungry travellers we all tucked in…and then arrived the main – a whole pizza each and we’re not talking your standard Pizza Hut large pizza this pizza was of gigantic proportions! Not to mention Gelato to finish…welcome to Italy J
