Totness was a cute little town and was very friendly. With two hours to fill before getting picked up, we found the Terrace Coffee Shop and enjoyed a drink and the sun. The owner of the shop was very chatty and upon hearing that we were from NZ, he began to tell us about his recent travels and knowledge of our home country. All very amusing and once again, we realised that tourists seem to see more of a country than most of the locals do.
After very proper Devon tea and scones we made our way to the bottom of town. Looking a bit like lost tourists we were shown sympathy and offered a lift and bed for the next two nights by Judy Nicholls. We met husband Rob, kicked son James out of his room, and ended up taking over the upstairs of the house, lucky other son Mark was not really disturbed by our visit at all. Once again it was awesome to stay in a home. We had our first lamb roast since being away which was absolutely amazing and got to pick blueberries.
It would come up later that blueberries would be what Judy and Rob remembered Kath by. Her love of blueberries and grazing tendencies meant that the berries we collected on our first night (approximately enough to fill most of a 2 litre ice cream container) were all but polished off by the end of our stay. Good effort Kath!!
Abby's jaw was still very painful and now she can not hear out of her left ear. So after a very poor nights sleep it was decided that a doctor's appointment was necessary. After a talk to the triage Dr Watkins on the phone an appointment was made to just check it out. 30 minutes waiting for the duty Dr and Dr Watkins swoops in help the Duty Dr out. He was waiting with the "ear looker in" thingy ready in his hand. Before she sat down it was in Abby's ear and Dr Watkins is making "mmm that's not good" noises. 5 minutes later, Abby walked out with the knowledge that the sore jaw and deafness and pain in her ear was a boil in her ear that was fairly badly infected. Antibiotics, ear drops, pain killers and a doctors allowance for sympathy were collected to hopefully speed up the healing process. Interestingly the Dr appointment was free!! The drugs were not.
We took Judy out for lunch at a little tea rooms, the food was very tasty and when the five of us walked in, we probably halved the age of the occupants. We then went to a glass blowing and ceramic factory which had some very nice items for sale. Unfortunately they were a little out of our budgets.
On our way home we stopped out at Dartington College and walked around the buildings and gardens and then enjoyed a BBQ tea back at Judy and Rob's, another first since we left home.
